A running toilet is quiet money. A wet floor around one is not quiet at all.
There is water at the base
Potentially severe
Usually the wax seal under the toilet has failed, sometimes the closet bolts have loosened and let the toilet rock. Either way the water going onto the floor is also going under it, so this is the one on this page not to leave.
The same toilet clogs over and over
A toilet that clogs weekly is rarely a plunging problem. It’s normally either a low-flow model that was never very good, something lodged in the trap that never fully cleared, or a partial blockage further down the line. Repeat clogs in one fixture and repeat clogs across the house mean different things.
One drain is slow
Hair and soap in a tub or shower, grease in a kitchen sink. Confined to one fixture, the blockage is usually within a few feet and it clears quickly.
More than one fixture is backing up
Potentially severe
Not a fixture problem. If the toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or two back up at the same time, it is further down the line, and clearing it takes different equipment from a fixture clog. Worth saying when you ring so we turn up with the right thing.
The disposal hums but will not turn
Something is jammed. Switch it off at the wall, then press the red reset button underneath the unit - that alone fixes a good proportion of them and costs you nothing. If it still won’t turn, the motor or the bearings have gone and it’s a replacement rather than a repair.
Why the house smells like sewage
Almost never a broken sewer. Three ordinary causes cover most of it:
A dry trap. Every drain has a U-bend holding a plug of water that blocks sewer gas. A guest bathroom nobody uses, or a floor drain in a garage, will evaporate dry in a few weeks here and let the smell straight through. Pour a jug of water down it and wait a day.
A failed wax seal. Same fault as water at the base of the toilet, and it lets gas out as well as water.
A blocked or capped vent. The plumbing vents through the roof, and if that’s obstructed the traps get siphoned dry every time something drains.
If none of that’s it, then it’s worth looking at properly - but try the water in the trap first, because it’s free and it works more often than you would expect.

Why it happened
Most of what we see at this level is wear rather than anything dramatic. Flapper seals harden and stop sealing, fill valves scale up and stop shutting off, wax seals compress, and disposals jam on things that were never going to go through them. Hard water speeds all of it up, which is why the same toilet often needs the same part again a few years later.
What happens if you wait
A running toilet is quiet money - a flapper that doesn’t seal can put a startling amount through the meter before anyone notices, and nothing about it looks like an emergency. Water at the base is the one to move on: that’s usually the wax seal, and every week it sits is more of the subfloor going soft underneath it.

- What if something isn’t right after you leave?
- Call us and we’ll come back and look at it, and there’s no $80 service call when it’s work we did. There’s no warranty certificate to read - what’s fair depends on what failed and why - but we’ll listen, look at what’s actually happening, and work with you toward a fair fix.
